Last week, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released a statement calling for deeper and more widespread adoption of efficiency measures, as the energy crisis instigated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine deepens. Founded by Henry Kissinger in 1974 to protect oil circulation after the 1973 embargo, the IEA has weighed in multiple times in recent years on energy efficiency.
“The cleanest, cheapest, most reliable source of energy is what countries can avoid using, while still providing full energy services for citizens.” The IEA statement reads. “That is why the IEA refers to energy efficiency as the ‘first fuel’. Without early action on efficiency the energy transition to net zero emissions will be more expensive and much more difficult to achieve.”
