ACHR News: HVAC Contractors Should Prepare Now for New DOE Standards

Updated: Jul 11, 2022

Starting January 1st, 2023, the Department of Energy’s new efficiency standards will go into effect. Experts urge HVAC contractors to start preparing for the update, which will be the second in five years as soon as they can. The new standard will raise the minimum efficiency of residential equipment by roughly 7%, which is equivalent to 1 SEER point and 0.6 HSPF for most HVAC systems. Requirements are still split three ways by region, with higher efficiency requirements for cooling equipment in the south. Date of manufacture and installation rules also differ by region. Another important detail for HVAC contractors is that heat pumps are subject to a national standard and not a regional efficiency standard, with the one exception of single package heat pumps in the southwest Visit ACHR News to learn more about how to prepare for the new standard.
